Celebrating Penygawsi Primary School: A milestone for Welsh education

WEPCo was proud to support the opening of three Net Zero schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Delivered under the Welsh Government’s Mutual Investment Model (MIM) for infrastructure and the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme, this achievement was made possible through a successful partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council (RCTCBC). Together, we helped open the doors of Pontyclun Primary, Llanilltud Faerdref Primary, and Penygawsi Primary Schools.
WEPCo had the pleasure of attending the official opening of Penygawsi Primary School – a celebration of community, collaboration, and the power and positive effect of education infrastructure to inspire future generations.
The event, hosted by the council, brought together educators, partners, students, and government representatives to mark this important milestone. We were truly honoured to be invited and to witness firsthand the impact that modern, well-designed learning environments can have on students and teachers alike.

A special conversation with the First Minister, Eluned Morgan
One of the highlights of the day was spending time with First Minister, Eluned Morgan. We had the opportunity to discuss the role WEPCo plays in delivering educational value for the Welsh Government and for the wider Welsh community.
It was particularly rewarding to hear the First Minister recognise the quality, consistency, and community benefits of WEPCo’s approach. These acknowledgments not only affirm the direction we’ve taken but energise our commitment to delivering educational spaces that foster ambition and inclusion.

Three schools, endless possibilities
Across Rhondda Cynon Taf, WEPCo have played a key role in bringing three brand-new, net zero in operation primary schools to life – each one designed to inspire pupils, support teachers, and open its doors to the wider community.
In Pontypridd, Llanilltud Faerdref Primary now offers a bright, modern single-storey building with space for 240 pupils and 30 nursery places, alongside outdoor learning areas and dedicated sports facilities. Over in Llantrisant, Penygawsi Primary features a light-filled central hub, for innovative teaching spaces for 310 pupils and 45 nursery places, and new games areas surrounded by landscaped green spaces. Meanwhile, in Pontyclun, a two-storey state-of-the-art school caters for nursery through to Year 6, centred around a shared hub and complemented by welcoming outdoor amenities.
Together, these projects reflect the power of partnership in creating spaces for sustainable, future-ready education – and creating environments where learning, ambition, and community can flourish.
