RCT Primary Batch
Llanilltud Faerdref Primary School, Pontypridd
The redevelopment of Llanilltud Faerdref Primary School will see the creation of a new single-storey building which targets net zero carbon in operation and accommodates up to 240 pupils plus 30 nursery places.
Designed to provide a vibrant 21st century learning environment for staff and pupils, the new building will contain modern facilities throughout, and include classrooms for nursery and reception age groups, three infant and four junior classrooms. Putting local people at the heart of this development, the new school will also offer spaces for the wider community to enjoy.
Externally, an entrance plaza with covered cycle storage, an outdoor classroom, and hard landscaped play areas will deliver a welcoming educational environment, while a two-court multi-use games area, playing fields, and a new car park with EV charging points will contribute to the school’s sustainable vision for future generations.

The whole community will benefit from this fantastic building, which will bring new opportunities for young people in their education for generations to come. The new facilities at Llanilltud Faerdref Primary School look fantastic, and I can’t wait to visit pupils and staff soon to see how they are settling in.

Penygawsi Primary School, Llantrisant
The construction of a new school building on the existing Penygawsi Primary site will not only provide access to a sustainable and inspiring learning environment, but it will also increase the school’s capacity to 310 primary school pupils (aged 4-11) plus 45 nursery places.

The English-Medium school will benefit from sustainable facilities that are net carbon in operation and innovative teaching spaces arranged around a central ‘heartspace’ with three ‘wings’. Designed with future generations in mind, the new Penygawsi school will accommodate two nursery, one reception, three infant and six junior classrooms – along with a main hall and various supporting areas.

To ensure education continuity, reduce disruption, and maximise investment value, the current building will remain in use during construction. Once the new school is operational, the old site will be demolished and replaced with a new car park, two multi-use games areas and a grass football pitch.

I’m delighted that the brilliant new school building for Penygawsi Primary has been fully-built on schedule, as this latest joint investment with Welsh Government has brought more 21st Century facilities to another local community. Pupils and staff can now look forward to returning after their summer break to a first-class, modern learning environment that is fully-inclusive and will support all areas of the curriculum.

Pontyclun Primary School
This project will provide a new state-of-the-art English medium primary school on the site of the existing school. Arranged over two floors, a key feature of the new building will be a shared ‘heart space’ area, a central resource running through the heart of the school. The building will achieve net zero carbon in operation, and provide classrooms for age groups from nursery to Year 6.
The completed development will deliver a vibrant learning environment, while also providing facilities for the community to use. It will include new external facilities including a car park (with EV charging spaces), cycle storage, hard play areas, two multi-use games areas and green spaces – in contrast to the hard landscape of the current site.

It was fantastic to meet staff and pupils in Pontyclun, who gave a very warm welcome and were excited to show off the progress being made with building their new school. I enjoyed taking part in signing the building’s steel frame, to celebrate completing the early stages of the construction phase. I’m looking forward to seeing the site being transformed in the months ahead, to develop excellent education facilities and a community hub for generations to come.
